among the art teachers that i've come across, none have ever expanded my 'horizons' as much as jeanie riddle. recently coming across this article of her in Canadian Art magazine (fall 09), brought back fond memories of her painting class. hers is what i picture when i remember and miss of art school. as little as it may be, i can honestly attribute more than half my art knowledge just from her class. and i appreciate it til this day. enjoying the reconnection, i read the article enthusiastically, which then turned achingly sad. i remembered seeing him at the end of classes and see her turn from a wise and composed teacher to a blushing woman happy to see her significant other. i remember him being tall, gentlemanly, sporting a flat cap, with large headphones around his neck. he could've honestly passed for a basketball player. it was funny how her composure changed at the very of sight of him. it was genuinely sweet. it was really easy to see how deep in love they were. that's how this article made my heart ache.
i can almost imagine her loss. and it is definitely reflected in her featured installation. just like to share my deepest sympathies.
"... like the music stopped."
